The front porch

This is a place for thoughtful stories, conversations, observations and reflections about teaching, leading, and the everyday life of serving our students and colleagues, our families and friends!

Whether you’re teaching or leading in a school site or district building, working as part of a collaborative teacher team or leadership team, or reflecting on your own daily teaching and living routines, welcome!

My hope is that each week you’ll discover something about your own story as a teacher, leader, and learner—and that you’ll be glad you stopped by this digital front porch as we learn together how to fully live the PLC life!

Why this Front porch exists

At first glance you might think “This website is about Professional Learning Communities.” And in some sense, it is.

Yet, it is also about living life well. When you hang out on the front porch of these essays for a while, you will discover this is a place beyond a PLC destination. This PLC front porch provides a weekly set of essays in three distinct categories: PLC Heart, Soul, and Joy, K-12 math, and most importantly PLCs and Hope.

In our remarkable profession, we teach, we encourage, we counsel, we serve, and we lead learning—for students, for colleagues, and often for one another. My hope is that these front porch conversations and essays will provide a little encouragement along the way!

After all, when we started the PLC process at Stevenson in the early ’90s we soon realized that the PLC life is indeed, a hope providing life.

I am glad you are here!
